The Southeastern Missouri Area Health Education Center and Missouri Southern State University held the 2016 Dental Academy on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at the Southeast Missouri State University Sikeston Regional Campus. High school and college students from across Southeast Missouri were invited to attend this day camp. Learning activities for the morning portion included: an introduction to dentistry and dental hygiene, taking impressions, pouring impressions, radiography techniques, disclosing solution, brushing, oral hygiene instructions, polishing, names and uses for instruments, exam techniques, injections, anatomy of the tooth, universal precautions, sterilization, and HIPPA/OSHA/patient confidentiality. The afternoon portion of the camp included a presentation by Lisa Kelley, RDH, on diseases and conditions of the mouth and a problem based learning case study. In the given scenario for the case study, the students assumed the role of a dental hygienist. Working in groups, students created a plan of care consisting of lifestyle modification and behavior change recommendations in order to improve their patient’s next visit to the dentist. Students then gave oral case presentations on their findings. A very special thank you goes out to Lisa Kelley (RDH), Emily Leslie (RDH), and the 12 dental hygiene students who volunteered their time to facilitate this workshop. Also, a special recognition of Emma Karafa and Becky Miller, currently second year Dental Hygiene Students. This is their third year participating in the Dental Academy, the first year as interested students, the next two years as Dental Hygiene student volunteers!
