On Tuesday, November 18, SEMO AHEC staff gave a presentation to OHCAP students at South Pemiscot High School entitled “Nutrition and Oral Health”. This presentation educated OHCAP students on how what they eat can affect their oral health. Specific topics included: signs of nutritional deficiencies, deficiency diseases and conditions of the mouth, how to eat right to maintain healthy teeth, and how sugary beverages can affect teeth. Students participated in two hands-on activities. The first activity involved students performing an intra oral examination on their partner to determine if they have any vitamin deficiency symptoms. During the second activity, students had to estimate the amount of sugar in a 12 ounce serving of various sodas and energy drinks.
