On Monday, August 25, 2014, students in Gloria Houston’s Health Occupations I class at the Sikeston Career and Technology Center participated in their first Oral Health Career Awareness Program (OHCAP) meeting and hands-on activity. 14 students were present for the morning class and 20 students were present for the afternoon class. Racheal Baker with SEMO AHEC gave a presentation to the students entitled “Oral Health and You”. This presentation covered how your oral health can affect your overall health. Students then swabbed their mouths and applied the swab to one section of an agar plate. They brushed their teeth afterwards and then swabbed their mouths again. This swab was then applied to a different portion of the agar plate in order to show before and after results. Students evaluated their findings a week later. They also learned how to check a patient’s blood pressure.
