Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country. The funds, collected during a three-week period, benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.*
The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.*
In February, the Puxico Junior High HOSA Club took up the cause by participating in the LLS Pennies for Patients campaign. The school raised a total of $617.89! 6th grade raised $279.09, 7th grade raised $164.04, and 8th grade raised $151.76. Since the 6th grade class collected the most change, they will receive a pizza party courtesy of LLS!
During the fundraiser, HOSA club members learned not only about the differences they can make, but also about leadership, teamwork, and what “doing good” for others can mean.
